So, which A/W16 beauty trend are you currently coveting? When you get to a certain age you pretty much know what suits you and what doesn’t, the flipside being that it can be really, REALLY hard to break out of your standard look and try something new – I should know, beauty editors are the worst and least adventurous with make-up of all the people I know. The irony. Thankfully we have make-up fairy godmothers like the wonderful Tahira who are more than willing to nudge us safely out of our comfort zones. Here, she gives us six wearable ways to sport this season’s best beauty trends, from daring gothic-toned lips (perfect for leftover lippy from halloween) to a great graphic liner look. Yes, you’ll need to be a bit brave but as you can see, the results are definitely worth it. Off you go then.
“Clemmie often wears a statement lip but rarely a dark one, yet I couldn’t think of anyone better to sport this season’s Matte Modern Gothic trend. Clemmie also never uses liner (and truth be told, neither do I) but for a modern 90s feel and a beautifully crisp lip edge (if that’s what you are going for) this Topshop combo of Girl Bye Lip Liner and Liquid Lip in Decoy is perfect.”
“Bethie has small eyes, fabulous lashes and great lips. She’s a perfect candidate for the Flutter Lash trend. I used various shades from Rimmel’s Magnif’eyes 001 Eye Contouring palette − a practical little nude matte/shimmer collection − then layered on two to three coats of Glo + Ray Air Ex mascara. I also rubbed a bit of red lipstick into Bethie’s lips for a softer more stained effect, letting the lashes shine as the stars of the show.”
“Lailar’s beautiful shapely eyes and cheekbones lend themselves perfectly to the Graphic Liner trend. First I applied a little 3INA Cream Eye Shadow in shade #312 all over the lid, then played with a Rimmel London ScandalEyes Thick & Thin Eyeliner on top and a Bourjois Liner Feutre (felt tip style) underneath. Easy Technique: Apply your liner as if you were going to draw a flick all the way across, but stop it short and square just about ⅔ of the way across the eye. Then, make a thin line on the bottom inner ledge. I curled Lailar’s lashes and added two coats of mascara. Clean skin and a neutral lipliner filled with clear gloss finish this look.”
“LADYLAND’s own resident mermaid Emma is a perfect model for the Jewel Tone trend. I basically created a smoky eye using a bright colour and added a bit of glitter to lift the look. I smudged Glo & Ray Summer Sky Eyeliner pencil (from the marvellous Balloon Pop Limited Edition set) all over the outer corner of the eyelid and then blended with a brush. Using what was left on my brush I smudged the under-eye area. I then lined the waterline with another Glow & Ray liner in Ocean Blue (same set) to add depth. For a bit of fun I smudged Topshop Glitter Liners in Shapeshifter and Wisp into the inner corners of the eyes and eyelids. To finish, I applied three coats of Miss Sporty Fabulous Lash Colour Extreme Mascara in turquoise.”
“Lovely Lotte never wears a dark lip, but she loved this Plum Ombre I created for her, getting a little creative with products. First I used a Topshop Lipstick in Role Model around the edge with a sharp lip brush (Try My Kit Co. Expert Line and Define) then I dabbed 3INA Liquid Eyeliner #505, a shimmery wine colour, in the mid-section and finished with a bit of classic clear MAC Lipglass. To offset the strong lip, I left eyes simple, layering YSL Full Metal Shadow in Onde Sable and Rimmel Glam’eyes Mono Eyeshadow in 001 Gold Record for a really glittery yet subtle eye colour.”
“I’m always up for a make-up adventure and love the idea of Red Eye Make-Up as a trend, but wanted to avoid looking ill or like an OLD teenager. So I just updated a basic flick with a bit of a red swipe using Glo & Ray Sky Breaker, again from the Balloon Pop Set. It went on really easily and smoothly and once set, stayed put! I then applied my flick as normal, using Sisley So Intense Eyeliner, curled my lashes and applied two coats of RMS Volumizing Mascara. For my lips we decided to try two versions: a really dark gothic look using Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick in Bankrolled, or Sisley Hydrating Long Lasting Lipstick in L24 Plum. Which do you like best?”
