We know, we know. It’s all feeling a little fuzzy around the edges still. There was the booze. Then the carb loading you did to absorb the booze. If your liver is still feeling the strain, why not revisit this deliciously detoxing smoothie from our resident clean eater and yogi extraordinaire, Christine Joos? That’s breakfast sorted then…
If you’re on a mission to spring clean your entire being this January (who isn’t?), you will love this smoothie. Apart from cleansing your liver, this mix is going to kick your energy levels sky high. The liver is your body’s detoxing machine, it literally filters and removes harmful substances like toxins, carcinogens and other wastes, extracts the nutrients you eat and turns them into usable substances.
Rich in betalains, folates, iron, vitamin C, copper, potassium and manganese, beetroots are a star among detox foods. Betalains are a group of phytonutrients, which help to detox your liver.
Beets also contain pectin, a fiber that clears the toxins that have been removed by the liver by helping to flush them out of the system. This way, they’re not reabsorbed by the body. These fibers are more complete if beets are ingested raw without being juiced – therefore we are adding whole pieces to this smoothie too.
The marvellous beetroot also contain the beautiful deep red antioxidant pigment betacyanin, which is responsible for a variety of health benefits and provides anti-inflammatory and antioxidant support. This means they’re not only anti ageing, they also help keep us healthy.
Ginger is a powerful detoxing agent, too, and the Vitamin C in the oranges helps to absorb the iron in the beets.
Chia seeds provide you with valuable omega-3 fatty acids and the banana and mango give your Queen of Detox a fruity, creamy texture that will make it a joy to cleanse your system and feel renewed, refreshed and re-energised.
