19 Feb WE’RE IN THE MIDST OF A MARBLE CRAZE
All trends come back around eventually – it’s the reason I have a pair of wide-leg Ksubi jeans in a vintage suitcase, waiting for their return to glory. Well, after a couple of hundred years languishing in antique books – and a brief appearance in the Memphis movement of the early ’80s – marbling has finally made a comeback.
It’s not a look you need much of: a notebook here, a scarf there… You wouldn’t want to go full baroque with this one, but done sparingly, it looks fantastic.
If you’re looking for the real deal, the guys at Il Papiro in Florence are the true artisans working in the traditional Tuscan style. The comeback version is less intricate, with bigger, trippy shapes. More psychedelic than antique. Everyone from Stella McCartney to Scottish textile superstars Timorous Beasties are getting into it. I think I might just have to try it for myself. There are plenty of ways to do it, including the latest craze where you use nail polish instead of ink. Check out this video – it’s amazing.
Stay tuned for a Ladyland DIY as we try it out for ourselves and see if it really is as easy as they say. I have a feeling I’ll end up in a splattery mess, but in the meantime, here are some great examples plus a good tutorial to see how it’s done (from the most wholesome lady on the planet).
